Bananas are elliptically shaped ‘pre-packaged’ fruit thought to originate in Malaysia. When they are peeled they contain a sweet firm, creamy flesh. Bananas typically grow in groups of 50 to 150 fruits and when grouped in 10 to 25 fruits they are known as ‘hands’.
There are two distinct species of banana – sweet banana (Musa sapienta, Musa nana) and plantain banana (Musa paradisiacal). Plantain banana are considered to be a vegetable rather than a fruit because they need to be cooked and have a starchier quality than the sweet banana. Read more
